PROJECTS
APAC-Missouri and APAC-Kansas Contract Bridge Replacement
 |
| More than 550 bridges, similar to this one in Maries County,
Mo., are being replaced over the next three years through
the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Safe and
Sound project. |
In May 2009, the Missouri Department of
Transportation awarded a $487 million design-build
contract for bridge replacements to KTU
Constructors, a joint venture of Kiewit, Traylor
Brothers and United Contractors. The four-year
project will replace 554 deficient bridges across the
state. APAC-Missouri was selected to construct one
of the first four bridges to determine which of KTU
Constructor's designs would work best before large-scale
construction begins in spring 2010.
In October 2009, APAC-Missouri removed and
replaced a single-span bridge on Route 42, near
Belle, Mo. The 55-foot-long bridge consisted of
seven side-by-side precast beams overlaid with
asphalt. Jeremy Bexten,
project engineer, and Scott
Vaught, bridge foreman, were
instrumental in completing
the $213,000 product under
budget and in 25 days – 10
days earlier than scheduled.
KTU Constructors plans to
subcontract the construction
of nearly all 554 bridges
during the next three years.
Most bridge replacements will
be completed during short
road closures (30-60 days)
using a variety of precast
beams and slabs to expedite
construction. Monthly KTU
Constructor lettings will award
packages of six to 10 individual
bridges to the "best-value" contractor.

 |
| There are four possible design options for placement of the bridges. The design
used in Maries County in the fall of 2009 was post-tensioned precast beams with
an asphalt overlay. |
Currently, APAC-Missouri and APAC-Kansas have
subcontracts to construct 17 KTU bridges in 2010.
"Our relationship with KTU Constructors will provide
the opportunity to build as many as 100 bridges across
Missouri over the next few years," said David Tag, P.E.,
bridge area manager with APAC-Missouri. "The strict
safety and quality standards required on the project
mirror those of OMG, which is a competitive advantage
for APAC-Missouri and APAC-Kansas."
Tag said that the statewide projects also will
provide an opportunity for APAC-Missouri and
APAC-Kansas to provide quarried aggregates and
asphalt paving services. |
