The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA)
presented Staker Parson Companies with the
2009 Quality in Construction Award at its 55th
Annual Meeting in Maui, Hawaii, on Jan. 20, 2010.
The award recognized a Utah Department of
Transportation (UDOT)
I-15 road-widening project
between State Street in Farmington and Main
Street in Layton.
The Quality in Construction award recognizes
projects that meet strict quality criteria for hot-mix
asphalt production, placement and compaction.
Staker Parson Companies placed nearly 300,000
tons of asphalt on the project, named "Davis County
Lane Gain," and received a significant portion of the
smoothness and quality incentives from UDOT.
The Lane Gain project added an HOV lane in each
direction on I-15 from the State Street overpass
to the South Layton interchange. The project also
provided a longer transition lane for traffic entering
the freeway at the South Layton on-ramp, greatly
improving traffic safety.
One of the major challenges for the UDOT project
was to complete the Lane Gain in conjunction with
the adjoining Legacy Parkway project.
"We recognized that it would be unsatisfactory for
motorists to have to drive into a construction zone
after enjoying the drive on the newly-completed Legacy
Parkway," said Scott Parson, president, Staker Parson
Companies. "Careful planning was essential for the
project's success, so all the partners, including UDOT,
Parsons Brinckerhoff and Staker Parson, teamed up to
ensure the projects could be completed on schedule.
In fact, the Lane Gain project reached substantial
completion by Nov. 30, 2008, an entire six months
before the originally scheduled completion date."
Staker Parson Companies also was presented
with NAPA's Ecological Award, which recognized its
Point East facility in Draper, Utah, as one of the top
hot-mix asphalt plants in the nation with successful
environmental sustainability initiatives, including
environmental management programs, community
outreach efforts, energy-efficient plant designs
and exemplary performance practices.
