Pike Industries Produces Videos
on Stimulus Projects

Wednesday, April 22, 2009

BELMONT — Pike Industries has announced that it will produce informational videos on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) road construction projects that it is managing in New Hampshire.

Pike's introductory video and future video updates appear at www.youtube.com/pikeindustries.

"Our goal is to let citizens and taxpayers know what is involved in each of these road construction projects and provide information on what we anticipate the benefits will be in terms of infrastructure improvements and job creation," said Christian Zimmermann, president of Pike Industries, Inc.

"While infrastructure investments are just one part of the economic stimulus plan, we believe it is important to keep people informed of the work we are doing and how their tax money is being spent," Zimmermann said.

To date, Pike Industries has successfully bid on five ARRA projects in New Hampshire. The projects include road surface rehabilitation of Route 101 from exit 6 to exit 9, road and bridge reconstruction on Interstate 89 between exits 11 and 12A, and various N.H. Department of Transportation District road resurfacing projects in Coos, Carroll, Grafton, Belknap and Merrimack counties.

Pike recently announced that the company avoided 50-75 layoffs this past winter and is in the process of hiring as many as 50 new employees as a result of the ARRA projects in New Hampshire to date.

Founded in 1870, Pike Industries is a leading road construction and aggregate manufacturing company operating in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. The company currently employs approximately 420 people in New Hampshire.

CEO of Oldcastle Materials Testifies Before the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee

Doug Black
Oldcastle Materials Inc. CEO

Congress is considering an economic stimulus package to spur the struggling economy and infrastructure investment is being considered. There is discussion and negotiation underway to perhaps consider a package before the end of the year. Anticipating such a stimulus proposal, Committees in the House of Representatives have been holding hearings to consider initiatives which could be included in the package.

Doug Black, Oldcastle Materials Inc. CEO, was invited to testify on October 29, 2008 before the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee regarding the importance of including road and highway construction funding in any potential stimulus package. Others from our industry, including representatives from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association and the Associated General Contractors, also participated in the hearing.

Black told the Committee, "The bottom line is that our industry is shrinking at a time when our nation's infrastructure needs are growing. I can't think of a better, more robust way to add jobs, good paying American jobs, than to invest in infrastructure, particularly road and highway construction and maintenance."

Committee Chairman Jim Oberstar (D-MN) stated that there are 3,071 ready-to-go highway and bridge projects totaling $17.9 billion and Black said, "Oldcastle Materials is prepared to put people to work and help generate economic activity in those places where the money is spent. Our work supports American jobs."
